I know it may sound dubious, but the last time I attended an international summit was also in tropical East Asia, also in December (I did not get any tan then, though, and neither will I get it here in Bali). It was when the World Trade Organization (WTO) held its last ministerial conference in Hong Kong. But those are about the only apparent commonalities between the two summits.
As my muscles tense by my taxi’s slalom-driving on busy Bali roads on the way to my first UNFCCC climate summit, I am struck by the odd mix of vehicles on the road. Actually, I would go as far as saying that this mix epitomises the international climate debate between rich and poor.
