The Duma has no ecology committee - the only war we are fighting is against ourselves

MOSCOW - In 2000 the Russian state organ for dealing with the environment was abolished, and late last month, the Ecological Committee of the Duma was scratched. They actually waited some time before closing the doors.

Meetings with the DOE – A janitor could have been as helpful

Late last month, fate brought me to the US Department of Energy (DOE) in Washington DC, where the hot and sticky weather oppressed the day. As such, while on my way to my meeting at the DOE, I anticipated a relief from the heat and – evidently as a results of overheating myself – envisioned getting some information.

Every year since 1996, several railway trains leave the headquarters of the German branch of Urenco in Gronau heading toward the Russian Ural Mountains and Siberia. The trains carry so-called “uranium tailings” – a kind of radioactive waste generated during uranium reprocessing or enrichment. For years, environmentalists have been fighting this obvious, poorly disguised violation. For now, however, Russian prosecutors prefer to turn a blind eye to the “fruitful cooperation” between Urenco and Russia’s Tekhsnabexport.
