Bellona in Russia
The Bellona Foundation is one of the world’s pre-eminent non-governmental organisations working with nuclear problems in Russia. Indeed, the birth of the organisation itself in 1986 coincides with the Chernobyl disaster of the same year, when Russia was still a part of the Soviet Union.

In Russia, environmental organisations are constantly accused of being hot-beds of espionage and “errand boys” for the West. Therefore, even gaining access to information that has been declared open by law is a relatively difficult process.

Environmental information in Russia
Bellona Web (www.bellona.org) was started in 1995 with the aim of distributing information about, and maintaining international attention on, the Nikitin case. When Nikitin was freed, Bellona Web’s mandate expanded.

Oil and Gas in the Arctic Area
Bellona’s Russian taskforce on oil and gas consists of scientists, experts and journalists from Bellona’s offices in Murmansk and St. Petersburg. In co-operation with our Norwegian offices and other NGOs and research organisations, we are working on issues concerning oil and gas in the northern areas of Russia.
