The oil leak triggered by a deadly rig blast off the coast of Louisiana on April 20th which killed 11 workers has already caused more environmental damage than the 11m gallon Exxon Valdez spill in 1989, one of the largest ecological disasters ever recorded.

New Orleans federal court judge postpones beginning of BP lawsuit in hopes of settlement – Bellona objects
In what Bellona’s president has called “a crime against environmental rights,” the massive civil lawsuit stemming from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill that was scheduled to open Monday in New Orleans has been postponed for one week to give oil giant BP and lawyers for more than 130,000 plaintiffs time to continue settlement talks.

European environmentalists appeal to EC for tighter offshore drilling regulations
Nine environmental organizations across Europe have written an appeal to European Commissioner for Energy Günther Oettinger urging that he not let weak offshore oil drilling regulations stand and instead prioritize environmental protection and the safety of offshore workers in his proposal for regulations to be put forth this month.

After harsh criticism, Transocean execs say they will donate ‘safety’ bonuses to families of those killed on Deepwater Horizon
In the face of withering criticisms of huge “safety” bonuses granted to executives with Transocean international, the owner of the Deepwater Horizon rig, says it’s top five executives will donate their windfall to families of the workers who died in the explosion aboard the vessel last May, US media have reported.

Transocean, operator of the Deepwater Horizon, hands out giant bonuses to execs for ‘safety’ in spite of Gulf oil blowout
Transocean, the world’s largest offshore oil-drilling firm that ran the Deepwater Horizon and bears part of the responsibility for the oil blowout in the Gulf of Mexico in March of 2010, gave its top executive bonuses in reward for the company’s ”best year” in safety, news agencies have reported.

WASHINGTON – BP is preparing for a so-called “top kill” in another of its hopes at clogging the leak in the Gulf of Mexico that has been gushing for 36 days. The top kill is a measure not everyone is sure about, but seems to be one of BP's last remaining options.
