The oil leak triggered by a deadly rig blast off the coast of Louisiana on April 20th which killed 11 workers has already caused more environmental damage than the 11m gallon Exxon Valdez spill in 1989, one of the largest ecological disasters ever recorded.

UPDATE: Gulf of Mexico oil platform explodes west of Deepwater Horizon site – still unknown whether oil is leaking
NEW YORK – An offshore petroleum platform exploded and was burning Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico about 80 miles (130 kilometres) off the Louisiana coast, west of the site of BP's Deepwater Horizon rig explosion on April 20. It is currently unknown if this newest explosion has caused a leak but officials had reported seeing no oil on the surface as of early afternoon US time.

US releases report on oil at sea as Deepwater Horizon declared largest accidental spill ever
NEW YORK – US Federal officials yesterday announced that the Deepwater Horizon oil spill has released 4.9 million barrels (208.8 million gallons) of oil from April 20 until it was effectively capped in mid July, making it the worst accidental oil spill in history, administration officials said.

COMMENT: Obama to address America on Gulf of Mexico oil spill Wednesday evening
WASHINGTON – On Tuesday 15th June at 8pm US time, President Obama will address Americans from the Oval Office, marking the first time he has done so since becoming President in January 2009, and speak to the American people about the ongoing Deepwater Horizon oil spill, now in its 56th day. Addressing the nation from the White House is something Presidents do infrequently. They tend to do it in times of crisis. It is a risky move that doesn’t always work out the way they hope.

WASHINGTON VIEW: Oil spills into congressional probes while Obama tries to get climate and energy bill to floor debate

WASHINGTON – BP is preparing for a so-called “top kill” in another of its hopes at clogging the leak in the Gulf of Mexico that has been gushing for 36 days. The top kill is a measure not everyone is sure about, but seems to be one of BP's last remaining options.
