Arctic oil drilling threatens international radioactive contamination from old Soviet nuclear dump-sites
A Russian Academy of Sciences study indicates decades worth of nuclear reactor and radioactive waste dumping in the Kara Sea by the Russian Navy - as well as fallout from Soviet-era nuclear bomb test - could cause heightened levels of radioactive contamination when major Arctic oil drilling projects ramp up.

ST. PETERSBURG - Andreyeva Bay is at the moment the largest scale international nuclear and radiation project in the Murmansk Region. Work at Andreyeva Bay will continue for another year. Bellona spoke with Valery Panteleyev, the head of the SevRao, the enterprise under Rosatom, Russia’s nuclear energy agency. SevRao has been charged with clean up and dismantlement at the Andreyeva Bay site.

The problem of rehabilitation of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) storage facilities in Andreyeva Bay on Russia’s Kola Peninsula has long been a great concern for Bellona. In our opinion, this site remains the first-priority nuclear hazard in Russia’s North and requires most urgent remediation.

IAEA wraps up 10-day nuclear emergency response test in NW Russia

Norway puts up $24 million to help Andreyeva Bay clean up

Norway is to provide $2.4 million (58 million roubles) for the overhaul of the notorious Andreyeva Bay nuclear waste storage facility in northern Russia, a spokesman for the Murmansk Region governor said on Thursday, RIA Novosti reported.

Russian navy puts first nuke sub to sea since Soviet fall

Russia has launched its first new-generation nuclear submarine since the fall of the Soviet Union, the submarine's maker said on Wednesday.
