The Russian Northern Fleet consists of nuclear powered submarines, surface ships, special mini submarines for rescue and other precise underwater activities, service ships, and special tankers. Thirty-five of the submarine in the northern fleet await dismantlement with their nuclear fuel on board. Service ships and tankers also posed special problems. Having served years beyond their engineered life-spans, they are irradiated and old.
Russia's navy has been deployed to find a ship reportedly hijacked three weeks ago in the Baltic Sea, the BBC reported.
Russia will build at least six nuclear-powered submarines with long-range cruise missiles for its navy, a source in the Russian Defense Ministry told the Itar-Tass news agency.
