The Russian Northern Fleet consists of nuclear powered submarines, surface ships, special mini submarines for rescue and other precise underwater activities, service ships, and special tankers. Thirty-five of the submarine in the northern fleet await dismantlement with their nuclear fuel on board. Service ships and tankers also posed special problems. Having served years beyond their engineered life-spans, they are irradiated and old.
Russia has launched its first new-generation nuclear submarine since the fall of the Soviet Union, the submarine's maker said on Wednesday.
