The Russian Navy built 249 nuclear submarines and five nuclear powered surface ships between the years of 1955 and 2004. One hundred nine-two of them have been taken out of service, or decommissions. In the Northern Fleet alone, 116 submarines have been decommissioned and await dismantlement. Of these, 36 still have their spent nuclear fuel (SNF) still on board.
The second shipment operation on transfer of reactor compartments from the first and second generation nuclear submarines to the Sayda bay storage facility is completed this year.
The first nuclear submarine of the total of three to be shipped was loaded on the Transshelf, semi-submersible ship of Dutch company Dockwise, at Polyarny shipyard on the Kola Peninsula and will be heading to Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk region, today.
Police in Severodvinsk (Arkhangelsk region) has arrested members of an organised crime group, which was stealing significant amounts of the titan metal from retired nuclear submarines during the last two years.
