The Inter parliamentary Working Group (IPWG) was established in Brussels in 1998 on the premise that the nuclear legacy was no longer the domestic issue of any one country. The main purpose of the group―of which Bellona is the secretary―is to bring together delegations from the parliaments, administrations and private industry from Russia, the United States, the European Union and Norway. Discussions cover the implementation of international projects, policy priorities, funding and legal roadblocks to progress. Bellona organises but does not set the agenda for topics, which are introduced by delegates. Meetings are held regularly on a rotating basis in participating countries.
A total of 19 Russian delegates from the State Duma, Federal Administration and nuclear experts will spend six days in Washington to discuss nuclear safety projects with U.S. Members of Congress, government agencies and private industry. At the heart of the visit is a two-day seminar of the Intergovernmental Working Group (IGWG), whose goal it is to discuss problems with existing cooperative nuclear material management projects.
The Bellona-organized Interparliamentarian Working Group (IPWG) meeting in Washington, January 25-26 shows that nuclear waste cleanup cooperation is a constant in the transatlantic relationship.
