G-8 initiative

The Group of Eight industrialized nations’ (G-8) Global Partnership plan was conceived during the 2002 Kananaskis G-8 summit with the intention of drawing in more funding for nuclear security projects in Russia. G-8 nations pledges $20 billion dollars over the 20 years beginning in 1992, with the US pledging $10 and the remaining G-8 nations―Japan, Russia, the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Canada―pledging the remaining $10 billion. Though many countries have donated in the name of the G-8 plan, is it difficult to distinguish whether some member nations are donating fresh funds or are donating retroactively, taking into account nuclear security funding the sent Russia prior to the Global Partnership’s creation.

Of all the nuclear issues that came under the scrutiny of the Russian and American governments during last weekend’s Group of Eight industrialised nations, or G-8, summit in Evian, France, one important and urgent issue was almost entirely absent from the agenda: plutonium disposition through MOX fuel—an oversight some say could lead to the scrapping of the entire programme by late July.
