No Greek plan for low-carbon energy supply
ATHENS – The lack of a structured long-term plan to reduce emissions is hurting Greece’s climate change credentials and the satisfaction caused to Greek environmental organisations by the decision of the Ministry of Development to ban the construction of hard-coal units five months ago has given way to deep concern.

Spain at the forefront of Europe’s CCS development initiatives
MADRID – Spain is among the European leading countries on CO2 capture technologies. The Spanish government and the main Spanish utility ENDESA are investing a considerable amount of money in developing a project to test oxy-fuel firing in an experimental plant being built in El Bierzo (North-western Spain in the province of León), but the funding plan for a full-scale demonstration project remains uncertain.

Shell to build CCS installation in Kędzierzyn, Poland?

KEDZIERZYN, Poland – A source close to a transaction a concerning carbon capture and storage (CCS) installation in Kędzierzyn in Southern Poland revealed that Shell was the most serious candidate to build the equipment. However Krzysztof Jałosiński, president of Zakłady Azotowe Kędzierzyn (ZAK’) one the country’s largest chemical producers, told the newspaper "Rzeczpospolita" that there are several candidates, Shell and GE (General Electric) among them.

CCS on a coal-fired power plant opens in the UK

BRUSSELS – The first CO2 capture and storage (CCS) test-plant in the United Kingdom opened at a coal-fired power plant on May 29th. The small-scale facility cleansing 1000 cubic metres per hour was put into operation at Longannet power station in Scotland by Aker Clean Carbon and ScottishPower, and is an important step forward to carbon-free fossil fuel electricity generation.

Washington View: CCS gets a big second chance, while US climate bill progresses amid dim prognoses for Copehagen

WASHINGTON – The Administration of US President Barack Obama has revived financial support canceled by the Bush administration for FutureGen, the United States’ first coal burning plant with carbon capture and storage (CCS).
