The Kursk Nuclear Power Plant is situated by the city Kurshatov in Kurskaya Region, 500 kilometres south of Moscow. The plant consists of four graphite-moderated reactors of the RBMK-1000 type (Chernobyl-type). The reactors were put in operation between 1977 and 1986.
An emergency system shut down the 2nd reactor at the Kursk nuclear power plant, the press service of Rosenergoatom said today.
Rosatom chief Sergei Kirienko announced in a meeting with nuclear workers today - which is the Russia’s national holiday for employees of the atomic industry - that the second Kursk Nuclear Power plant (NPP) will “definitely be built,” the RIA Novosti Russian news agency reported.
Five thousand people took part in the protest against postponing unit no. 5 construction at Kursk NPP in Kurchatov city in the end of March.
