The Kursk accident

Russian nuclear-powered Oscar-II class cruise missile submarine, the Kursk, sank just outside the cost of the Kola Peninsula east of Murmansk on August 12th 2000 taking the life of 118 sailors. The submarine was raised in October 2001 to be later defuelled and scrapped. The official reason for the accident was said to be torpedo explosion.

The families of the crewmembers of the Kursk submarine which sank in the Barents Sea in August 2000 have filed an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported on January 20.
