The Russian Northern Fleet is one of the biggest source of possible radioactive contamination in Russia. It encompasses five based near Arkangelsk and Murmansk. Of the some 116 vessels that have been decommissioned from the Northern fleet, 36 await dismantlement with their spent nuclear fuel (SNF) still on board. The Northern Fleet has received much more attention from donor nations so has a sounder infrastructure than the Pacific Fleet. But other problems, like temporary waste storage shortages continue to plague it.
Russia will build at least six nuclear-powered submarines with long-range cruise missiles for its navy, a source in the Russian Defense Ministry told the Itar-Tass news agency.
ST. PETERSBURG - Russia’s Federal Service for Environment, Technology and Nuclear Oversight (Rostekhnadzor) chief Nikolai Kutin confirmed a series of planned inspections to check observance of regulations governing spent nuclear fuel shipping at the Kola Peninsula Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), and the physical safety of nuclear material at the Smolenk NPP and the Mayak Chemical, the service’s press service said.
ST. PETERSBURG – Northwest Russia’s Nerpa Shipbuilding and Repair yard has successfully completed state tests of pontoons that will be used in helping to safely transport decommissioned nuclear submarines to dismantlement.
