The Bellona Foundation is a multidisciplinary international environmental NGO based in Oslo, Norway. Founded in 1986 as a direct-action protest group, it has since blossomed into one of the world's most recognized technology and solution-oriented environmental champions with offices on two continents. There are altogether some 40 ecologists, nuclear physicists, engineers, economists, lawyers, advisors and journalists working at Bellona.
The Bellona Foundation is financed by industry, business and individuals as well as through project-orientated grants from philanthropic organizations and the Norwegian government.
Throughout our offices, located in Brussels, Murmansk, Oslo, St. Petersburg and Washington DC, Bellona works with relevant governments, experts and other NGOs in achieving sustainable solutions to the world's most pressing environmental problems. These include fighting global warming, the clean-up after the Cold War legacy in Russia and the safety of the oil and the gas industry in Europe. The work is carried out through information dissemination, lobbying and campaigns directed at local and governmental levels. Bellona publishes its findings on the Bellona web site in order to inform and educate the public about the environment in which it lives.
Bellona is a solution-oriented organization, focusing on making constructive contributions to resolve environmental issues. As an example, we put the first electrical and hydrogen-powered vehicles on the road in Norway.
Bellona is very involved in the fight against global climate change and has produced reports for the public, other NGOs and world leaders offering alternatives to current energy and transportation structures which produce fewer greenhouse gases in a safe and profitable way. Bellona advocates enhanced energy efficiency, renewable energy and CCS as the strategies to reduce global CO2 emissions. Bellona has also taken on the challenge of educating industry about the advantages of CCS and is widely consulted by industrial stakeholders on all issues related to CCS.
An essential part of Bellona's work is to inform the public, politicians and industry about climate change solutions, where CCS is an important technology. Bellona was probably the first environmental NGO to promote CCS, having followed the discussion about CCS since 1992. Through this work the organization has become experienced in holding presentations about CCS for different audiences and has encountered a broad specter of arguments and questions about CCS.
Bellona is strongly involved in the European Technology Platform on Zero Emission Fossil Fuel Power Plants (ZEP). Bellona has played an active role in the CCS debate in Brussels by communicated ZEP recommendations to decision makers and Bellona has subsequently contributed to a strong foundation for CCS within the European Commission. We have also arranged open hearings on CCS in the European Parliament to strengthen the communications between industry, research, and MEPs and have used our position in ZEP to address public communication by ensuring strong publicity on CCS in the media.
